In 2023, I had the honor of joining Cindy Gelormini—author, autism advocate, and founder of Robbie’s World Foundation—on her heartfelt podcast Spectrum Perspectives. The episode was more than an interview; it was a meeting of two mothers, two visionaries, and two voices committed to rewriting the narrative around autism.
Cindy’s podcast is a sanctuary for real talk. She’s known for her raw honesty, her deep empathy, and her ability to hold space for stories that are often overlooked. As a mother who lost her son Robbie to a seizure in 2017, Cindy brings a depth of understanding that transcends clinical jargon and dives straight into the soul of what it means to love, advocate, and persevere.
During our conversation, we explored the origins of Spectrum Tech—my nonprofit vocational school and village designed for neurodiverse individuals. I shared how my son Stephen’s journey as an autistic photographer and trauma survivor inspired a movement rooted in dignity, creativity, and community. We talked about the power of reverse inclusion, the importance of trauma-informed care, and why ethical alternatives to ABA matter so deeply.
🎙️ One of the most powerful moments came when Cindy asked, “What do you wish people understood about autistic individuals?” A synopsis of my answer: That their behaviors are not deficits—they’re adaptations. That their strengths are not quirks—they’re gifts. And that when we design environments that honor their nervous systems, we unlock brilliance.
We celebrated the fierce love that drives both of our missions. Cindy’s warmth and authenticity made it easy to speak from the heart, and I left the conversation feeling seen, heard, and deeply connected.
